Then there was light

Tom and I decided it would be exciting to put a window back into the cellar, whilst not an urgent job it was something that felt like we were putting back rather than the constant ripping out. We had two small windows in the side of the house which to be frank were hideous and completely out of place, we have installed new larger windows and by pure chance them came out complete and fitted where the window would once have been.

So many years after there was last daylight in the cellar a window was installed. Now there is the problem of what we do with it. A little boys den, or home cinema for the big boys!! I wonder who will win that one.

The weather has certainly turned colder but we have managed to achieve quite a lot on the outside of the building. We have roofs at  single storey, two storey and three storey heights. Fortunately the third storey was re- roofed in recent history. We have now done the three single storey roofs which needed attention,  they were a mixture of lean to and flat roofs. We concentrated on the first storey as now the big roof on the two storey side is the next one that really needs some attention, but by doing the flat roofs we now have a platform to work off..
With the weather turning so cold we were lucky Brian Mayer who is working with us on the project had an old log burner which he has brought up, and set up in the kitchen. Its important that the guys all get a warm when they have a break, so we have found all the old wood that is being ripped out of the house useful.
It is certainly that case that Maud, as I have nicknamed the house has to get worse before she gets better, and she is certainly looking in a very sorry state.Today  a couple dropped by the  lady had worked at the house for twenty years cleaning. Sadly I could not show her around as it is to much of a building site at the moment,  but invited her to come back in a few months and I would show her around. She was delighted that the house was getting a new lease of life and hopefully when we have finished Maud will stand for another couple of hundred years.
Heres a little taste of how she is coming along.

Good Luck with everything, sounds like extremely hard work to me.

It really is amazing to see some of these photographs. Certainly very different from when I showed you around in July/August! All the best with the work, I may drop in sometime if I am passing along the M42. With best wishes, Sam (Bidwells).
